Turn Someday Into Day One
What is Al-Anon?

It's the meeting for everyone else in the house.

AA is for the person drinking. Al-Anon is for the people around them — the wife, the husband, the partner, the mother, the grown-up child who still picks up the phone at midnight. It has been running since 1951, and the whole idea is that the family gets hurt by this too, and gets to have somewhere of their own to take it.

What actually happens at a meeting

Far less than people brace for. You turn up, usually to a church hall, a community room, or a video call. Somebody reads a few opening lines. People take turns talking about their own week — what happened, what they did with it — and nobody interrupts, gives advice, or tells anyone to leave their marriage.

You do not have to speak. You can say "I'll just listen today" and that is a completely normal thing to say.

You don't have to give your surname. What's said in the room is meant to stay in the room — that's the anonymous part, and it's taken seriously. Most people describe the first meeting the same way: quieter than expected, and a strange relief at hearing somebody describe their own house out loud.

What it costs, and what they'll want from you

Meetings run in person, by phone and online, at most hours of the day and night — the online and phone ones matter if you can't easily leave the house, or you'd rather not be seen walking in somewhere local.

Is it religious?

It's a twelve-step program, so it talks about a "higher power," and some meetings say a prayer at the end. But it isn't tied to any church, and how you read that phrase is left entirely to you — plenty of members are not religious at all and simply take it to mean "something other than my own willpower."

If one meeting doesn't suit you, another will. They vary enormously.

Worth knowing: meetings differ more than the name suggests — different rooms, different hours, different feel. People who say "I tried it and it wasn't for me" often tried exactly one. If you can, try three before you decide.

The nights between meetings

Here's the honest gap, and it's not a criticism of Al-Anon — it's just how a weekly meeting works. The meeting is Tuesday. The bad night is Saturday, at 1 a.m., when they're not home and you've read the same text eleven times.

This app is built for that hour.

It's not a replacement for a room full of people who've lived it, and it isn't trying to be. Go to the meeting. This is for the six days in between.

If your person is the one drinking

Al-Anon is for you, not for them — they'd be looking at AA, or a doctor. Two things worth knowing if they're thinking about stopping: heavy daily drinking is one of the few things it can be genuinely dangerous to quit cold turkey, and that's a conversation with a doctor, not an app. And nobody gets talked into it from a standing start.

Five short emails, one a day

Written for your side of it, not theirs. No day counting, no advice about how to fix them — and nothing that tells you to leave or to stay. That part is yours.

Day one is called "You're not imagining it."

One a day for five days, then I leave you alone. Unsubscribe in every one.

If tonight is worse than that

If you're in crisis, or you've had thoughts of hurting yourself, please talk to a person tonight — not an app. Call or text 988 (US), any hour, free and confidential.

If you're afraid of your partner — afraid, not just worn down — the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788, for people of every gender and every kind of relationship.

Built by someone who spent 38 years being the one with the secret. The app is free to start. On Android, get it on Google Play.
